That arrangement quietly ended sometime around 2014. The feed replaced the front page. The ranking became opaque. The editor never came back.
FireHose is an attempt to bring the editor back, but as something a single person can own. The brief you write is the editorial mandate. The model is the desk. The morning dispatch is the wire. The work the system does overnight, while you sleep, is the work an editor used to do at a folding table with a red pen.
FireHose is built small on purpose. It is independent, it answers to the people who read it, and it is deliberately the kind of operation where you can write to [email protected] and a person writes back.
